Transforming Government since 2001
The adoption of SMK Pakan in Pakan district under the ‘Telekom Malaysia (TM) School Adoption Programme’ proved to be a perfect choice for TM to realise its objective of bridging the digital divide in rural areas.

Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Joseph Salang said the school now has become a centre for information and communication technology (ICT) knowledge and applications not only for the district but also for other surrounding areas.

“It started with the basic ICT training which was provided for students and teachers and subsequently extended to the community members.

“The school has proven itself to be an ICT icon for Pakan,” he said when officiating at the closing of the programme at a hotel here yesterday.

He said connection, communication and collaboration through ICT was the best method in the dissemination of information and eye-opener beyond geographical and physical borders.

Additional facilities and support provided by the government such as 1Malaysia Netbook complemented the comprehensive programmes like the adoption programme, which will benefit society in a holistic way, he said.

TM chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie earlier in his speech said since 2004 it had allocated some RM2 million to the programme that had been implemented in 10 schools nationwide.

He said the programme had benefited a total of 4,732 students, 305 teachers and 1,195 members of the community.

“The programme is a continuation of a similar project with the then Ministry of Energy, Water and Communication at SMK Ayer Lanas in Jeli, Kelantan from 2003 to 2006.

“Among the objectives is to create awareness on the importance of good academic achievement among students from low-income households,” he said.

He added it was a holistic programme that encouraged the involvement of parents and the community at large to attend ICT and motivational courses as well as parenting seminar to become better equipped in educating their children.

Later at the function, Salang, who is also Julau MP, presented the 1Malaysia Netbooks to SMK Pakan students.

Also present were TM Group Corporate Communications vice-president Izlyn Ramli and TM Sarawak general manager Abdul Rahim Mohd Ali.
