Transforming Government since 2001
The integrity of Immigration officers is among the three focal points to be paid attention to with the proposed implementation of the biometric system at entry points in the country.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein when stressing this said the other two points are to work with the counterparts in the home countries of arriving tourists and the upgrading of equipment.

He said while it was vital to use modern technology and equipment to detect any possible threat especially with the challenges of the new borderless world, personnel manning entry points must also uphold a high level of integrity since they work closely with staff stationed at airports and seaports nationwide.

“We can look at the equipment, as we just recently announced how important it is to have the biometric system in place by June (this year) and assess the advanced screening of international passengers.

“We also want to instill a sense of pride, discipline and integrity among the officers who are serving at the entry points. I have no hesitation when it comes to the safety and security of our country,” he said referring to the recent arrest of nine Immigration officers and personnel involved in a visa scam that led to the arrest of members of the syndicate.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing a mock hostage rescue drama by the Special Action Force (UTK) of a hijacked plane at the international airport here with Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, Hishammuddin said it was important to maintain the security measures as the crimes were different.

“At the same time, we do not want to pose or cause any inconvenience to genuine or innocent travellers.

“We need to implement a formula for the smooth implementation of the security measures so that it would not only meet the targeted group but also to resolve problemsarising therefrom,” Hishammuddin said. On Sabah’s 22 proposals for resolving the illegal immigrant problem, he said that most of the proposals will be adopted and only about three to four needed to be endorsed by the Cabinet as it involved policy matters.

“Most of the proposals can go ahead and they include the implementation of the biometric system and the advanced screening of migrant workers.

“All these can proceed for Sabah as well,” he said.

Touching on the hostage rescue exercise dubbed ‘Ex-Rampas KK’ held during the wee hours of the morning yesterday, Hishammuddin said that the police rescue of hostages from a hijacked plane was one of the many specialties of the UTK.

“We want the public to know that we have the expertise to deal with such a situation.

“This is also to assure that our country is safe and to ensure you can all sleep well. They are the unsung heroes,” he said.

The exercise and demonstrations, he added, are carried out by the UTK often but the public may not be aware of their operations.

“Sometimes the public do not know what the police are doing and probably only see issues involving snatching, ‘saman ekor’ and others, but there is a lot being done and yet many are still pointing fingers at the police.

“In fact what you see today (yesterday) was only a small percentage of their skills, which needs to be upgraded constantly.”
