People in the rural areas have been warned against misusing their newly acquired information technology (IT) skills for their political interests.

Planning and Resource Management Assistant Minister Mohd Naroden Majais said rural folk should not follow the current trend of using blogs or websites to spread incorrect information and humiliate others.

“There have been many incidences where the IT tools are being used to smear others, giving inaccurate information, which can confuse people and causing division among us,” he said.

Naroden, who is also Simunjan assemblyman, made the statement when closing the Community Broadband Centre (CBC) Family Day programme at Padang Sentral Simunjan last Sunday.

Meanwhile, CBC Simunjan chairman Jennet Usin said it now has 1,088 registered members since its inception on Jan 2, 2008.

“We have trained 1,415 people around Simunjan through IT programmes.

“We provide basic computer courses, e-government, e-education and e-commerce, which are aimed to expand knowledge of the people here about the usage of IT,” he said.

Also present were Penghulu Raili Alias and other community leaders.
