Transforming Government since 2001
Malaysia Agricultural Research & Development Institute and Malaysia Emergency Response System have recently implemented a solution to accelerate traffic and improve communications across disparate government departments.

Like many public sector organisations, both MARDI and MERS999 have data centres and branch offices spread over large geographies.

The growing need to collaborate, the introduction of media-rich files, and the rising cost of bandwidth are common challenges.

Sharing of information and communicating in real-time with officials in other sites has become increasingly inefficient and costly.

The two Malaysian agencies decided to deploy a wide area network (WAN) optimisation solution, through technology provided by Silver Peak, which will enable them to rapidly move large amounts of data across long distances and minimise WAN costs.

The same solution has been effectively adopted among government users in the US.

Sound Transit, a public agency which runs a network of bus, train, light rail and other transport services in Tacoma, Washington State, had severe problems sharing information securely.

“Our WAN was regularly experiencing 80 to 90 per cent saturation as workers shared large documents.

“It was taking excessively long periods of time to upload and download routine files, which made it increasingly difficult to collaborate on time-sensitive construction projects,” said Garv Nayyar, Senior Integration Engineer of Sound Transit.

By accelerating its network, Sound Transit enjoyed an increase in network capacity by 95 per cent, and saved approximately US$100,000 in recurring WAN costs.

“Governments, hospitals and campuses are increasingly demanding for data centre class WAN optimisation. The key drivers are disaster recovery, data centre consolidation or cloud, server and storage centralisation, real-time collaboration, and more,” said Alan Leong (pictured), Vice President of Asia Pacific, Silver Peak.

“WAN optmisation enable data centres to do more with less links without packet loss and minimum latency,” Leong said.

According to Gartner, Silver Peak solutions are preferred when data centre-to-data centre performance is critical and in branch-to-data centre networks when UDP traffic and error-prone links are important factors.
