he broadband penetration rate in Sabah is one of the country's lowest, at 11.9 per 100 household, State Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai said.

As such, he said, the state and federal governments had initiated several projects to enhance usage of information and communications technology (ICT), particularly among villagers in rural areas.

This include "e-Desa Kundasang" targeted at rural farmers in Kampung Bundu Tuhan to jump-start villagers in experiencing the use and value of ICT, he said when launching Broadband Opportunities Talk Series here Wednesday.

Yee said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had also implemented ICT-related community projects such as e-Community Centre in Kampung Sungai Damit, Tuaran, community broadband library in Kanibongan, Pitas, and community broadband centre in Kampung Sukau, Sandakan.

He said the Community Broadband Centre was equipped with training facilities and a manager has been engaged among the locals to run the centre.

"This has certainly shed some light to the underpriviliged by narrowing down the digital divide," he said.

Yee said ICT advancement has been phenomenal and it has given an impact on social network through the widespread use of online social network as well as the mushrooming number of web blogs.

The government viewed this as a positive development with regard to broadband use, he added.
