The e-Xpats Centre is the first to be established in the country and is capable of reducing the waiting period for processing from previously one month to six working days. Its computer system is integrated with that of the Immigration Department.
Launching the centre Thursday, Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof said the one-stop centre, which was the first in the country, was aimed at enhancing the public delivery system for companies, particularly those within the MSC area.
"More of such centres will be established in other cybercities around the country. In fact, there are already two operating in both Penang and Kulim Hi-Tech Park.
"Within the Multimedia Super Corridor area in Cyberjaya, we receive some 5,000 applications for expatriates per year from the 900 MSC status companies here," he told reporters after launching the centre here.
The centre, added Fadillah, would also further commit the Government to the Bill of Guarantees for MSC companies by ensuring unrestricted employment of foreign knowledge workers.
"Hopefully, this initiative will further attract more companies to invest in the ICT industry and in the MSC," he said.
It was set up through collaboration between the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), Bank Negara, the Immigration and Customs Departments, Finance Ministry and other agencies.
Fadillah said MSC was on track in realising its objective of having 2,400 companies and providing 100,000 jobs for knowledge workers by the year 2010.
"The MSC is already providing some 63,000 jobs right now. Our companies are generating some RM13bil in revenue and RM5bil in exports last year," he said, adding that Malaysia was currently third behind India and China for international shared services and outsourcing.
