The Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications is in discussion with the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) to deploy the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) based e-government services.

"With IPV6-based e-government services, we are confident that we would be able to achieve our aspiration to transform Malaysia into IPV6-enabled by 2010," the ministry's secretary general Datuk Dr Halim Man said.

Delivering the keynote address at the opening of "Next Generation IP Networks/3-G and Next Generation Mobile Communications" seminar, here today, he said the government's leadership was necessary to propagate IPV6.

He said the ministry has also established the National Advanced IPV6 Centre (NAV6) to assist in the promotion of IPV6 usage in the country, both for human capacity building as well as awareness and promotion of IPV.

IPV6 would also enable the proliferation of web-based services as security would be enhanced, he added.

Halim said the ministry was also in the process of implementing broadband network in Penang and expect this to be followed by other states.

"We are getting other stakeholders, especially the states to participate in broadband service deployment. We do understand that broadband services expansion can only be brought about by appropriate content delivery and we are working on that too," he said.

The ministry jointly organised the one-day seminar with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan.
