The Selangor State Government has set aside RM25 million to broadband- enable and link 345 Government offices in the State by year-end. The initiative, known as SelNet or Selangor Broadband Infrastructure Project, is expected to accelerate, integrate and transform public services in the State.

"With the availability of SelNet, Government agencies and departments will be able to operate seamlessly with one another, and this will enhance operational efficiency and productivity. For the people, this will mean easy and convenient access to Government services as they will be able do things like paying assessment fees online," said Selangor Menteri Besar's political secretary Datuk Dr Karim Mansor.

The broadband infrastructure will support the State Government's existing and future applications such as accounting systems, geographical information system, rent collection system, e- Government, voice over Internet protocol, knowledge management, disaster recovery and Government intelligence.

The SelNet project has been awarded to Obnet Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Kannaltec Berhad. The company will work with Cisco Malaysia and TM, which will provide the networking technology and architecture for the local area network and Metro Ethernet services respectively.

Obnet's chairman Datuk Yusof Ampuan Kechil said SelNet will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will involve linking 112 sites, which will be completed by end of July, while the second phase will link the remaining sites, including one data centre, which will be completed by November. The broadband network will be powered by six-megabit-per-second and 10Mbps Metro Ethernet connections by TM.
