Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)-status companies may soon be able to take part in a multi-million riyal (100 riyal=RM98.15) e-government project to turn Medina into an intelligent city.

The project involves transforming the entire government operations in the holy city of Medina to e-government services and has entered its third phase.

"We have undertaken phase one and two. We are now at phase three where there are opportunities for MSC-status companies to come in," said Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) vice president Abdullah Kadir Bacha.

MDeC and its Saudi partner, Integrated Visions, were given the task of implementing the project as part of a bigger 10-year programme to turn Medina, located about 280 miles from Mecca, into a modern city, he told Bernama today.

As consultant, the MDeC-Integrated Visions joint venture company had since 2004 undertaken strategic planning and training to lay the groundwork for the e-government project.

"We have just been given the request for proposal. We have submitted the bids and are waiting for the results to identify the partners," Abdullah Kadir said.

"The e-government project is worth a few hundred million riyal," he added.

Apart from Medina, MDeC also provides consultancy services in Bahrain, Qatar, Iran and Syria.
