An electronic community programme comprising an exposition and launch of a 'e-Homestay' portal is some of the highlights during the "Malaysia ICT Month" in Penang next month.

The event is held in conjunction with the state's hosting of the Multimedia Super Corridor International Advisory Panel (MSC-IAP) meeting.

The 'e-Homestay' programme is a tourism concept characterised for travellers to stay or live in local homes, said Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon. "The key objective of this concept is to further enrich the local Malaysian tourism industry, as the community will benefit most from the outcomes intended," he told reporters in Penang yesterday.

The 'e-Homestay' programme will be launched with Mengkuang Titi on mainland Penang as the first destination.

During the "Malaysia ICT Month", the various MSC flagship applications will also be on display, including e-Government, Telehealth, and Smart Schools.

The "Malaysia ICT Month", themed "ICT For Innovation", will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"The main objective is to promote ICT (information communication technology) as a catalyst for economic growth and the foundation for the development of a Malaysian society that is knowledge-based and information-rich.

"The event also aims to raise the level of awareness about ICT, thus helping to reduce the digital divide among Malaysians," Jamaluddin said.

Apart from the 9th MSC-IAP Meeting 2005 and the MSC ICT Fair held in Penang next month, other ICT-related activities include the MSC Global Technopreneurs Forum 2005, the Global Public Policy Conference 2005, e-Secure Malaysia 2005, Sarawak ICT Week and the Asean Communications and Multimedia Exhibition 2005.
