Arlington residents seeking to reduce their carbon footprint now have a new app to help.
GetGreen Arlington, produced by the county and the nonprofit EcoAction Arlington, seeks “to inspire and empower residents and businesses to take climate action.”
App users track progress in preventing carbon emissions by completing “sustainable activities” like riding public transit or choosing local goods.
The app notifies users about local events and initiatives and offers advice on how they can live more environmentally friendly lives.
Meant to help Arlington’s effort to become carbon neutral by 2050, it also includes info about some local programs. These include the county’s composting program, “The Shed” tool-lending library and volunteering opportunities with Energy Masters.
“GetGreen Arlington is more than an app — it’s a movement to unite our community in taking bold, collective climate action,” Elenor Hodges, executive director of EcoAction Arlington, said in a press release. “Together, we are not only addressing greenhouse gas emissions but also making our Arlington community healthier and more sustainable for generations to come.”
The county is planning some eco-themed pop-up events in coming months to spread the word about the app, which was funded through a grant from the nonprofit Smart City Works.
Information will also be posted in newsletters and around community centers and Natural Resource Conservation Areas.
