Transforming Government since 2001

Digital wireless connectivity is coming to a small town in Texas under a new smart city and 5G project from NTT Data.

The city of Brownsville, Texas, is currently experiencing a growth spurt after Space X Starbase complex, the Texas LNG facility and deep-water Port of Brownsville are causing a lot of attention for the region. However, digital capabilities and secure wireless connectivity is not something the city installed.

Data would deploy smart solutions and private 5G wireless connectivity to bring internet of things (IoT) to the entire city. This will allow the city to:

  • Enhance citizen services
  • Increase public safety
  • Achieve sustainability
  • Use real-time data analytics
  • Use AI empowered wireless network

"The partnership between the City of Brownsville and NTT DATA to implement a Private 5G network is a crucial step towards transforming our city into a technology hub,” said Helen Ramirez, ICMA-CM, AICP, Brownsville City Manager. “This advanced infrastructure will enhance connectivity for our residents and businesses, while resolving pain points for the city. It will attract new opportunities and innovations to Brownsville." Development phases The first part of the deployment will focus on Brownsville’s downtown core including the four public parks, Department of Public Works Yard and the airport.

Part of the smart infrastructure will leverage new and existing data-collection devices to establish IoT throughout the city. NTT Data will deploy a P5G network (private 5G and smart city) in phases to create blanket coverage that supports both IoT and high bandwidth use cases in Brownsville.

The P5G networks create a connective mesh where smart solutions can be deployed. This includes the delivery of data analysis, predictions and recommendations in real-time.

Additionally, the private 5G network will enhance public safety and security across key community areas like Dean Porter Park, Linear Park, St. Charles Park and the downtown recreational center.

The smart city solutions will utilize machine learning and AI analytics to help the city address issues such as planning and management of resources.
