Attendees Learn Best Practices for Designing Citizen-Centric Applications and Practical Tips for Building a Successful Enterprise Architecture Plan In response to the urgent needs of government agencies seeking more efficient ways to serve citizens, Sapient (NASDAQ: SAPE), a leading business and technology consultancy, hosted a leadership summit to discuss strategies for achieving true e-government transformation. Held in Washington D.C. on March 20th, the summit united senior U.K and U.S. administration officials with private sector business leaders to share best practices in designing customer-centric applications and developing a successful enterprise architecture.

"These are challenging times, and people are relying on their governments more than ever before to provide information and services on their terms," said Matt Lane, vice president of Sapient's Government Practice. "We designed this summit to help government agencies learn how they can apply private sector best practices to implement an effective e-government strategy and fundamentally improve service through technology."

The summit included presentations and panel discussions, which provided practical advice for overcoming the primary issues facing government agencies today, including improving online service without sacrificing security, managing a wide range of content, and building a scalable IT infrastructure.

Following are highlights and key learnings:

  • Dan Chenok, branch chief for Information Policy and Technology of the OMB, spoke on an Enterprise Architecture Planning panel led by Sapient's chief technology officer Ben Gaucherin. The panel included senior executives from Staples and the leading European travel company Opodo, who shared best practices for building alignment between business and IT sponsors and maximizing return on technology investments.
  • Alan Mather, chief executive officer of e-Delivery for the U.K.Office of the e-Envoy, addressed the challenges of creating citizen-centric online applications, including eliminating information stove-pipes, aggregating massive amounts of information, and scaling for future growth. Mather is responsible for delivering on the U.K. charter to make all government services available online by 2005. Working with Sapient, Mather's team revised www.ukonline.gov.uk, and the site has resulted in a ten-fold increase in citizen visits.
  • James Johnson, the chairman for leading research firm The Standish Group, identified the top reasons that most IT projects fail. Lack of end user involvement during the development phase was identified as the biggest challenge, followed by low executive support.
