Transforming Government since 2001
The state government's online procurement service now has 10,000 registered vendors.

That was the word Monday from the Department of General Services (DGS) which administers eMaryland Marketplace, a Web portal where vendors hoping to sell goods and services to state agencies can see information on contracts and submit bids.

The portal was launched in 2000, when the state passed a host of bills aiming to make Maryland a leader in e-government, and eMaryland Marketplace has won awards from technology groups since its launch.

It's also signing up vendors at the rate of 200 a week, DGS officials said.

Electronic procurement is seen as a way to give government-agency buyers a channel for real-time communication with vendors, execute paperless transactions and cut costs for state agencies. State officials also say eMaryland Marketplace helps minority contractors compete for business.

"As the business arm of state government, DGS is encouraged by the private sector's support of eMaryland Marketplace," says DGS Secretary Steve Cassard in a statement.
