The federal government is trying to get more out of its presence on the Internet.

President Bush today signs the Electronic Government Act. The act is designed to put more government information and services online. It's part of Bush's effort to streamline the executive branch and make government more accessible to its "customers."

The act creates a new E-Government office to oversee government-wide technology efforts.

Some goals: to allow Americans to file and prepare their tax forms online for free, and to create a Web site that makes it easier for the public to participate in federal rulemaking.
