Denmark ranks second in broadband speed among the Nordic countries, according to the statistical publication entitled 'Telecommunication Markets in the Nordic Countries 2009'.

Following close behind Sweden, Denmark has 12.9 broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants with a minimum speed of 10 Megabytes.

The statistics have also shown that the penetration rate of broadband in Denmark is the highest among the Nordic countries in terms of fixed subscriptions, as well as for all broadband subscriptions (i.e. mobile broadband included). Overall, the Nordic countries follow each other quite closely and they are in the top 10 of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for fixed broadband penetration.

Denmark has been the leader of the Nordic countries in the use of mobile phones for sending text messages (SMS), with an average of 2 000 SMS per mobile subscription a year. Likewise, the country has the largest broadband telephony (VoIP) subscriptions per capita in the region.

Presented in June 2010, the 'Telecommunication Markets in the Nordic Countries' is a joint publication of all the Nordic telecom regulators, based on a joint statistical database which is maintained by the five regulatory authorities. The databases of the regulatory authorities and the statistics of national Statistics Centres form the source of information.

The main tasks of the Nordic Statistical Joint Cooperation are to develop and maintain the common statistical database. The comparison of the figures among the Nordic countries is thus facilitated. The working group of the Nordic Statistical Joint Cooperation also works towards developing a common policy on issues that are addressed in relevant international organisations such as the OECD and the European Union. Moreover, the working group serves as a network for experience exchange and as a discussion forum on statistical issues.
