Digital Bangladesh aims to facilitate people's communication activities through email or cell phones. Internet, which is a global system of interconnected computer networks, is designed to make faster communication and receive any information instantly from hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (www). Before using the internet, people must have some knowledge in English, on computer operating system or cell phones and ability to get access to the Internet. People use information and communications technology to enrich their lives and realise their social, cultural and economic ambitions.

Successive governments appear to have paid only lip service to the information technologies (IT) sector without addressing the real needs of it. The budgetary allocation for developmental or promotional activities in the IT sector remains meagre. The case of a high tech park to house IT projects at Kaliakoir in Dhaka can also be cited here. Work on the project has barely started although it was taken up in 1999. The country depends on only one submarine cable connection but the line gets disrupted, leading to intermittent losses for IT businesses.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged all concerned including the technologists, researchers, relevant organizations and individuals to come forward from their respective fields for building a ‘digital Bangladesh’.

“You have a great role to play for building a digital Bangladesh and your opinion and work plan would be evaluated properly in this regard,” she said while inaugurating a four-day BCS Digital Expo-2010 at Sheraton Hotel here this morning.

AT a time when the world is advancing fast by dint of technology, Bangladesh cannot stay behind and, therefore, the government has laid thrust on easy and quick delivery of public services.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina deserves appreciation for declaring her government's vision for building a Digital Bangladesh by 2021. Nevertheless, the hurdles to achieving the goal are formidable.
