Despite making considerable progress in recent years in getting broadband numbers up, Ireland is showing signs of falling behind on broadband speeds and quality.

A new EU study showed that 13.4pc of the share of fixed-line broadband in use in Ireland is equal to or above 10Mbps. The EU average is 38.9pc.

Other data for Ireland shows that 63pc of Irish people regularly use the internet, a little less than the EU average of 65pc.

In these challenging market conditions, companies are actively exploring ways to reduce their international cost base and operate more efficiently. Ireland is a proven model with more than 100 Shared Service Centres currently in Ireland with 30% of thee operating in the high-tech sector, a level four times higher than the global average.

Ireland has been ranked first in the ninth Benchmark Measurement of European eGovernment Services, released today by the European Commission.

In the full online availability ranking, Ireland was number one among the 32 measured countries, on 100%, compared to the EU average of 82%.

The report found that the Republic has a centralized approach to public procurement activity with the establishment of a National Procurement Service and of a national eTendering platform.

The four out of 10 small businesses in Ireland that don’t have a website have been offered the opportunity to set one up for free.

An initiative entitled Getting Irish Business Online launched today is targeting the 40 per cent of SMEs that don’t have an online presence. It aims to get 25,000 new Irish businesses online within a year.

Speaking at Google headquarters in Dublin today, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he was “astounded” at the high number of such businesses that did not have a website.

Irish people have better access to public services online than most Europeans according to the European Commission.

The commission’s ninth e-Government Benchmark Report released yesterday shows Ireland ahead of other countries when it comes to providing e-government services.

The report examined the online availability of 20 basic public services, such as car registration, tax declaration and company registration, across the EU.
