Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry, yesterday launched eOman, the Sultanate of Oman’s digital society initiative from the Information Technology Technical Secretariat of the Ministry of National Economy, during a ceremony attended by members of the royal family, ministers, undersecretaries, diplomats, IT professionals, leading public and private sector officials and dignitaries.

Yahya bin Saud bin Mansour Al Sulaimi, minister of education, inaugurated a lecture titled ‘e-government to e-governance’ at Knowledge Oasis Muscat yesterday.

This lecture, the first in the ‘MECIT Series of Lectures on Digital Society’, is organised by the Middle East College of Information Technology (MECIT) and was delivered by Prof. Matthias P. Finger, an internationally well-known scholar in the area of e-governance.

The Sultanate of Oman's national ID card programme is the first smart card-based citizen ID solution ever to be deployed in the Middle East, making it a landmark project of its kind.

The Sultanate of Oman, located in the Persian Gulf, has a population of 2.9m citizens and residents. Although 68% of the Sultanate's revenues derive from oil, the economy also relies on non-oil producing sectors, such as agriculture, industry, tourism, mining and fishing.

An agreement providing for consultancy services for the development of e-legislation to support Oman digital society and e-government initiative was signed yesterday by Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, secretary-general at the Ministry of National Economy and head of the executive committee following up implementation of the national information technology strategy.

The agreement was signed with Said Al Shahry Law Office, which is in partnership for this project with the law firm Baker & McKenzie.
