An emergency room doctor meets a patient for the first time who claims a need for opioid medications. A pharmacist notices a consumer who seems to frequently refill the same opioid prescription. Whether it’s a licensed healthcare professional in a large city, a suburban area or in a rural community, there’s a short timeframe for them to be able to answer the same question — is this patient’s request for controlled medication legitimate or is it related to addiction?

The answer is at the core of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies’ (DORA) Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). The PDMP helps licensed healthcare prescribers and dispensers make more informed decisions before prescribing or dispensing controlled substances to patients. DORA’s PDMP website serves as a critical “front door” for licensed healthcare prescribers and dispensers to access this powerful tool, and was selected as a 2017 Horizon Interactive Award recipient.
