The town hall has just signed off on a 100,000-euro plan to install more CCTV cameras across the municipality, in order to boost both road safety and public security.
The new cameras will be placed in some key areas to keep track of traffic flow, spot incidents quicker, and also make life easier for locals and visitors. They’ll join the network of devices already in use, but with some upgraded tech that plugs into an intelligent management system. In other words: the town is entering into the age of smart surveillance.
Spain is leveraging advanced smart digital solutions in the city of Girona to anonymously collect visitor data, with the primary goal of enhancing urban management and safeguarding its cherished historical sites. By gathering real-time insights into tourist movement patterns without compromising individual privacy, authorities can better control overcrowding, optimize infrastructure, and implement targeted preservation efforts—ensuring that Girona’s cultural heritage is protected while improving the overall visitor experience.

The new WiFi hotspots, part of the “TuWifiMunicipal” network, are available from 7:00 AM to 11:59 PM daily and can be accessed via smartphones, laptops, and tablets. Users connect through a personalised welcome portal where they must accept terms of use. The service includes content filtering to ensure safe and appropriate browsing for all users. This initiative is funded through the European Union’s Next Generation funds and is integrated within the Estrategia de Desarrollo Urbano Sostenible e Integrado (Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy), reinforcing El Ejido’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
