Four buses operating on the H12 and D20 routes have been fitted with a camera system using AI to detect vehicles stationed in bus lanes and at bus stops and causing an obstruction for buses. The trial is the result of a challenge launched and funded by Barcelona City Council in collaboration with TMB and Fira de Barcelona, as part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility.
Conceived by the company Hayden AI, the system provides statistical information on data recorded while the bus is circulating on its usual route: it takes photographs and records video sequences automatically, gathering all the details and information from the context of the traffic infringement. The cameras do not record number plates or people, and no fines are being issued for drivers or vehicles owners. The pilot project for this tech system will last six months.
TMB is testing the system to evaluate the possibility of implementing it on its vehicle fleet and it being used to impose fines in the future. The initiative is in line with the specific vehicle operated by TMB and the City Council since May last year to fine drivers for vehicle infringements in bus lanes. The trial in Barcelona is the largest rollout to date of automated systems of this type on board buses in Europe.
