  • IN: Tamil Nadu: Coimbatore tops Smart City project Implementation, in state

    Coimbatore appears to be topping the chart, in comparison to other cities in the state, with regards to Smart City implementation.

    In accordance with a data submitted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the city tops in the number of projects for which work has commenced as well as the number of projects which have been completed.

    An independent director of the Coimbatore Smart City Limited has presented a project idea to the city corporation to set up a waste-to-energy plant to manage solid waste.

    At a press interaction on Saturday, independent director G Krithiha said such a plant could be a feasible way to manage solid waste dumped in the city’s dump yard and also to manage the increasing inflow of waste. “I studied the solid waste management in the city and took stock of the number of garbage bins. I also mapped arterial roads and studied how often garbage is being removed,” she said.

    Hyderabad is set to add another jewel to its crown as metro commuters in the city will soon be able to book parking spots with a mobile app. The new project will let commuters book parking spots using the cloud-based parking management system, and it integrates features like digital payments via a mobile app for parking. Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) launched ‘Park Hyderabad’ project, which is a paid parking facility with digital systems and mobile app at 24 Metro Rail stations across the city.

    Smart cities’ have of late become a buzzword. Six months after its announcement though, the concept itself is in the draft stage. The 2014-15 Union budget had provided Rs 7,000 crores for 100 smart cities of which only Rs 924 crores was reported as spent. In 2015–16, only Rs 143 crores has been allocated (apparently under the assumption that states will contribute a higher share).

    What does it mean to be a smart city? Further, smart cities promote the extensive collection and analysis of data in order to make cities more efficient and, purportedly, more equitable. At a more ideological level, smart cities seek to “depoliticise” urban governance, arguing that a more scientific approach — using data and digital technologies — can achieve this.

    Two villages in the Jaipur district will be developed as 'Health Smart Villages' at the initiative of Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh, under which data will be collected and computerised to manage the health scenario of the places.

    Rajasthan University of Health Sciences will develop Lakhesara and Kapurwala village as the 'Health Smart Villages' which will have better treatment facilities for its residents.

  • IN: Uttar Pradesh: Agra smart city health lab to conduct 700 tests for up to 80 % lower rates

    Equipped with advanced machines, a central health laboratory developed under the Agra smart city project with an investment of Rs 4.80 crore officially started working on Saturday. Mayor Naveen Jain inaugurated the facility and dedicated it for better health care of the people of Agra. He also got his blood test conducted at the laboratory and received the result within two minutes.

    The centralised lab developed inside the Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) premises has adequate facilities to conduct 700 different types of tests. The lab has a capacity to generate 1,800 test reports in an hour.
