While trade and industry organisations are eager to provide their suggestions on Erode’s requirements for transforming into a Smart City, there is no clarity on the process involved.
Perceived emphasis of the Central Government on e-governance without any mention about infrastructure development by the City Corporation identified for the project has created confusion. Also, the funding pattern indicating that 50 per cent of Rs. 100 crore to be spent every year for five consecutive years has further added to the ambiguity.
It is another matter that nothing substantial could be achieved on the infrastructure front with just Rs. 100 crore per year, N. Sivanesan, president, Federation of All Trade and Industries Association, said.
A place like Erode requires integrated industrial and agricultural growth warranting much higher investment for economic progress without which Smart City would mean precious little. Of what use would electronic integration of statistics and accounting procedure be without ground-level development.
Wi-Fi throughout the city limits could, perhaps, become a possibility through the Smart City project. But what about preparedness of the people to derive utility, he wondered. The CII has already made known its support for any initiative for expanding employment opportunities to cater to the local talent pool.
CII’s City Development Plan for Erode is attuned to Vision 2023 of the State.
