  • Jamaica: iMap to track tax delinquents?

    Government is considering the use of an interactive map of Jamaica developed by the National Land Agency (NLA) to track tax delinquents.

    The NLA, in collaboration with Globe Insurance Company of Jamaica Wednesday unveiled the iMap Jamaica at a function at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston.

    According to state minister with responsibility for local government, Robert Montague, the Government was looking at using the interactive map to track persons who owe outstanding taxes.

    STARTING today customers of the state-run National Land Agency (NLA) can access a broad range of information through 'eLandjamaica', an Internet-based land information service, which was launched yesterday by Dean Peart, the minister of land and environment.

  • Jamaica: Montego Bay: Telecoms Ministry to Establish More Community Access Points

    Minister of Energy, Mining and Telecommunications, Clive Mullings, has announced that the Ministry will be placing emphasis on the establishment of community access points, as part of efforts to increase public access to information technology.

    "We are going to have these community access points in shops, community centres and the like. This means that the man in the community can go to the shop, which has an electronic access point, and pay his bill so you do not have to have the actual hardware and software in your home," he stated.

  • Jamaica: Motor vehicle import licence system goes paperless

    Persons applying for motor vehicle import licences will now be able to complete the entire process online without the need for printed documents.

    The Trade Board's paperless import licence system was launched yesterday by Phillip Paulwell, the minister of industry, technology, energy and commerce yesterday, at the board's office on Constant Spring Road in Kingston.

  • Jamaica: Online payment for property tax

    THE TAX administration directorate last year introduced an ePayment portal or virtual collectorate to offer taxpayers the ease and comfort of paying a select set of taxes online (at anytime from home or office) by visiting the website www.jamaicatax-online.gov.jm.

    During this period, persons are reminded that they may use the convenience of the online payment facility to pay their property tax, which became due April 1, 2006.

  • Jamaica: Paperless Licensing Regime at Trade Board June 1

    As of tomorrow (June 1), importers doing business with the Trade Board will start benefiting from its paperless licensing regime.

    Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Phillip Paulwell made the announcement at a press briefing held on (May 30), at the Constant Spring Road offices of the Trade Board.

    Taxpayers will soon be able to make payments at dozens of private collection agencies throughout the island as the government examines tenders from companies that include Paymaster Jamaica and Bill Express to provider the collection service.

  • Jamaica: Revised ICT Strategic Action Plan to be Unveiled Soon

    The national Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategic action plan, which has been under rigorous revision over the past year, is to be unveiled within the next three weeks, says Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Kern Spencer.

    This plan seeks to use information and communication technology to enhance Jamaica's social and economic development and is geared at ensuring that the country continues to benefit from emerging technologies over the five year period, 2007-2012, and beyond.

  • Jamaica: St Ann and St Mary teachers get ICT training

    One hundred and forty teachers from high schools in St Ann and St Mary were on Friday presented with certificates following their completion of a training course in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) under the Government's 'e-learning' project.

    The teachers have been certified as competent to incorporate ICTs into the teaching/learning process. More than 800 teachers have received training so far.

  • Jamaica: Tax alerts by cell phone coming, long lines to go

    Government has reached an agreement with Jamaica's three mobile companies that will see phone users receiving 'tax alerts' on their cellular units.

    Under the agreement with Digicel, Cable & Wireless and MiPhone, the Government will send information alerts on taxes and other matters to cell phone users via text messaging, commerce and technology minister Phillip Paulwell announced Thursday.

  • Jamaica: Tax collection grows online

    It accounts for only a little over one per cent of all taxes paid in the country, but Jamaicans are increasingly transmitting their returns online and revenue officials say they anticipate substantial growth in the coming years.

    "Now that the filing and payment of all major tax types is available online, we expect to see the collections grow even further and that the Virtual Collectorate becomes one of the highest collection stations," said Meris Haughton, the communications director of the government's Tax Administrative Services.

  • Jamaica: Tax payment now possible at Paymaster

    Paying property taxes and traffic tickets has been made easier with yesterday's launch of Paymaster's $32 million e-government access service.

    A collaborative effort between the government and the Audrey Marks-led company, the initiative enables members of the public to make payments for specific tax types through the Jamaica tax portal online payment facility, developed and maintained by state agency, Fiscal Services Limited, for the Tax Administration Department.

    Jamaica, in recent years, has begun to embrace the concept of e-Government.

    This is evidenced by the growing number of government agencies that have begun to implement facilities that allow members of the public to conduct business via the Internet.

    Put simply, e-Government refers to the use of computer-aided technology, particularly the Internet, to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of government agencies and the services they provide.

    Independent Jamaica has had an inconsistent history - illustrious in several regards, yet unremarkable in others. We have much to celebrate and a great deal to be proud of. Our global stature defies our relative size as our flag is recognisable and respected, and our people fly it high in all corners of the world. However, the true promise of independence - the vision of prosperity and a thriving, vibrant economy that engenders opportunities for our people to pursue their dreams and unlock their potential - has eluded us and remains, for even the most optimistic, somewhere on the distant horizon.

    Before Independence, Jamaica exploded out of the blocks like its athletes, our most discernible insignia of character and hope. Our port cities were bustling - flooded with the influx of rural workers seeking a piece of the economic pie. By the 1950s, the pace of our growth was staggering. We quickly positioned ourselves among the world's leading producers of alumina. Agricultural exports grew briskly. Tourism became an increasingly important contributor to our developing economy. The productivity of the Jamaican worker was at its peak. By Independence, we were a nation of tremendous potential, ready to conquer the world.

  • Jamaican government gets high marks for telecoms framework

    ecretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Dr Hamadoun Toure, has given the Jamaican government high marks for the progress made in bringing the country’s telecommunication system to the standard set by the ITU for developing countries.

    Dr Toure, who was speaking at an ICT Forum hosted by the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce (MITEC) on Tuesday, said he was impressed and encouraged by the level of commitment by the government in harmonising the telecoms sector.

  • Jamaican Senate passes e-transaction Bill

    The Electronic Transactions Bill, which sets out the legal framework for electronic transactions and connected matters, was approved in the Jamaican Senate on Friday.

    Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, Senator A. J. Nicholson, who piloted the Bill, noted that the legislation “above all, encourages trustworthy commerce in this computer age… it seeks to eliminate barriers to electronic commerce, resulting from uncertainties over writing and signature requirements.”

  • Jamaican team to study national ID system in South Korea

    As Jamaica looks to establish a National Identification System (NIDS), a 12-member government team will leave for South Korea on Friday to study best practices from the Asian country's identification system.

    The group will consist of members from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Tax Administration Jamaica, the Registrar General's Department, e-Gov, the Electoral Commission, Office of the Prime Minister, and Jamaica Post.

  • JM: E-Government Initiative Moving Ahead

    he Government is moving ahead with its E-Government (E-Gov) initiative, aimed at using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to improve service delivery within the public sector.

    Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, said the transition to E-Government is now underway in earnest and at the end of next month, the Government will complete the winding up of the Central Information Technology Office (CITO).

    The agency was originally tasked with co-ordinating the Government’s ICT activities.

  • JM: Gov't Making Use of ICT in Fighting Crime

    Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, says the Ministry is taking full advantage of the offerings of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in combating crime across the island.

    Making his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 19, Mr. Bunting noted that a number of crime control and prevention initiatives have been implemented with the use of modern technology.

    Among these is the recent upgrading of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Automated Palm and Fingerprint Identification System (APFIS) at a cost of $260 million.
