  • IN: Karnataka: 225 Aadhaar stations to be set up in Mandya

    With the help of the district administration, 225 Aadhaar (Unique Identification Number) card allotment stations will be established in various parts of Mandya district, said D H Ravindra, chief executive of centre for e-governance.

    Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, he said around 18 lakh people will be provided with Aadhaar cards within a short period of time. In the first stage, around 20 to 25 stations will be established in the district headquarters and will be extended to all taluk headquarters. Later, stations will be established for each gram panchayat, he said.

    The State e-Governance department, the registrar to enrol residents for issuing the unique identity number in Karnataka, has decided to conduct enrolment at your doorsteps. Community-based enrolment drive will soon be launched in Bangalore and other cities.

    All those who identify themselves as a community, have to place a request to the department to conduct a community-based drive, at their place. The department will set up an enrolment station at any place, proposed by the community, and conduct the process free of cost.

    Starting next month, that restless wait at the airport or coffee-breaks in Bangalore's IT hubs will be a 'unique' experience. Faced with the giant task of dishing out Unique Identity (UID) numbers to some 95 lakh Bangaloreans, the department of e-governance is targeting colleges, IT hubs and areas like airports and government offices with high concentration of people.

    It is planning to go for 24/7 enrolment in the IT city starting mid-June.

    Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is confident that the city will get Unique Identity Card for all by March 2012.

    After launching registration for the distribution of ‘Aadhaar’ cards on Wednesday at Yavanika on Nrupatunga Road, he encouraged the public to enrol themselves to ensure 100 per cent participation in the state. He said that in Tumkur and Mysore districts, 95 per cent enrolment has been recorded while enrolment in another 13 districts in Karnataka has just begun.

    Enrolment will start in the remaining districts of Karnataka by August 31. “We need the public’s co-operation to make it a complete success,” he urged.

  • IN: Karnataka: Bangalore: Budget proposes more funds for Aadhaar

    The Department of e-governance can heave a sigh of relief with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee proposing more funds to complete the enrolment of another 40 crore citizens for Aadhaar cards starting from April 1.

    While the department is waiting for guidelines from the Centre, there have been 1.48 crore enrolments and Aadhaar numbers been issued to 1.1 crore people.

    Registration for the Unique Identification Number (UID), Aadhar, will be conducted in two phases in the City.

    However, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), starting this Thursday, has opened counters for registration for mediapersons and their family members at the Press Club. For the general public, centres will be opened across the City August 17 onwards.

  • IN: Karnataka: Bangaloreans need not queue UIDA

    The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) will begin issuing Aadhaar numbers to Bangaloreans from August 17 to 30 through its special centres.

    During the first phase, 120 stations will be set up across the city. This will be increased to 1,100 stations during the last phase.

    Considering the city’s vast population, services will be available for the general public from 8am to 8pm and 10pm to 6am at select BangaloreOne centres.

    By March 2012, Bangaloreans would complete the unique identification (UID) enrolment like their counterparts in Mysore and Tumkur, said DV Sadananda Gowda, chief minister.

    Karnataka was one of the first states to launch the UID programme headed by Nandan Nilekani, a Kannadiga, he proudly pointed out.

    Get paid for getting your unique ID (UID) now. To push up enrolment in the Aadhaar project, the state government will shell out Rs 100 to every poor pensioner and job-seeker under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

    The government will directly transfer Rs 100 into the bank accounts of beneficiaries of social security schemes — pensioners, physically disabled and widows — and those of rural employment guarantee scheme who are below poverty line after they produce relevant documents as proof at the time of enrolment.

    "The process of registering BPL residents involves cost for both the beneficiaries and the state government. Since the beneficiaries will be forgoing a part of their daily wage by taking time off work to enrol for Aadhaar we want to incentivise them. Social security pension and job guarantee schemes are among the six services we have shortlisted to be Aadhaar-enabled," M N Vidyashankar, e-governance principal secretary, told TOI.

  • IN: Karnataka: Get ready: UID Bangalore campaign kicks off today

    The mammoth task of handing out unique ID (UID) numbers to 80 lakh Bangaloreans kicks off on a grand scale across 105 centres from Wednesday.

    The department of e-governance, the principal registrar for Aadhaar in the state, will take up enrolment at select BangaloreOne centres, stadia and community halls in the first phase. The number of centres will be doubled by this month-end.

    Newly sworn-in chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda will symbolically kick off the Bangalore campaign by turning up for enrolment at Yavanika, the State Youth Centre on Nrupathunga Road, on Wednesday morning. As reported earlier in TOI, Aadhaar enrolment in the IT city will be 24/7 with special focus on institutional enrolment.

  • IN: Karnataka: Get UID number at your post office

    From today, you can enrol for your Unique Identification Number (UID) in Bangalore. Just walk into one of the post offices which have been empanelled for the enrolment. The project was launched by India Post, one of the registrars of UIDAI, at the General Post Office on Friday.

    About 4 million enrolments and 18 lakh Aadhaars (12-digit unique number) have been issued in the state. From today, enrolments will start in a phased manner through post offices but full-scale enrolments will kick off in a month's time once tenders are finalized. As of now, 10 post offices in Bangalore will begin enrolment.

    The distribution of Unique Identification (UID) number to 6.11 crore Bangaloreans will be completed only by July 2013, even though those in Mysore and Tumkur are likely to get their 12-digit Aadhaar numbers in six months.

    Though the state has given administrative clearance, it will take time to commence the issuance of Aadhaar number to the citizens.

    Ashok Dalwai, deputy director-general, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), said the pilot project taken up in Mysore and Tumkur was on full swing, and distribution of UID numbers would be completed in those two districts within six months. “After Mysore and Tumkur, we have planned to take up this project in two stages. The e-governance department has invited tenders last February for eight districts, where the second phase of the project will be implemented,” he said.

    At the Aadhaar technology centre in Marathahalli, a large team of technologists and software developers hack away at code that forms the backbone of India's most ambitious citizen enrolment project seeking to create a biometric inventory of the second most populous country in the world.

    Bangalore, which hosts both the Tech Centre and the Central Identities Data Repository, will now see the project go live with many more enrolment centres and a steady ramp-up planned in coming weeks. The project, currently under way in select post offices here and in its final phase in Mysore and Tumkur districts, has around 592 enrolment stations across the State, a number that will go up to over 800 in a month, top officials of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) told The Hindu.

    The District Administration has clarified that the processing of Aadhaar, the Unique Identification (UID) Number, is completely free of cost and has cautioning citizens against imposters who promise to get them Aadhaar card for a fee.

    Till date, about 3,90,000 registrations have been done across 70 centres set up under Mysore City Corporation (MCC). In all, 130 units are functioning in these centres, said Dr. A. Ravindra, Chief Executive Officer, e-Governance, Govt. of Karnataka.

    Speaking at a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office here last evening, Dr. Ravindra said that the application forms used to fill out details are also distributed free of cost.

    Though the department conducted proof-of-concept (pilot project) on over 2.66 lakh people in Mysore and Tumkur districts, only 52,238 UIDs could be generated. "This was to test the fingerprint scanner, biometric devices and other technology, as older people have rough hands. The software responded well for both categories of people," sources added.

  • IN: Karnataka: UID enrollment centres expanding in Bengaluru

    Enrollment for the much talked about UID or Aadhaar scheme is expanding in Bangalore starting this week.

    In addition to post offices, exclusive Aadhar enrollment centres have started functioning in the city from August 17. They are set up by the Centre for e-Governance (CEG) of the state government.

    Also, in a move that indicates the state government's intent to enable widespread access, enrollment centres are also being setup within residential communities as well.

    The month of May has been set as a deadline to complete the registration for Aadhar (Unique Identification Number) in Mysore district, said M.N. Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary, Department of e-Governance in the State.

    Speaking after reviewing the progress of Aadhar at the Deputy Commissioner's office in the district here recently, Vidyashankar said that in order to speed up the process of registration, Centres have been opened at the Gram Panchayat level to enable rural peo-ple to get themselves registered.

    So if you want to apply for Aadhaar, hang on for six months. There is a long list of token holders waiting for their appointments for biometric capture.

  • IN: Kerala finally logs onto Aadhaar, the Unique Identification project

    Aadhaar, the Unique Identification (UID) project of the Central Government was finally launched in Kerala today by Chief Minister Shri V S Achuthanandan at a function held in Thiruvananthapuram. The enrolment for UID in Kerala was delayed because of the use of proprietary software by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which has now been resolved.

    In her welcome speech, Ishita Roy IAS, Director, Kerala State IT Mission said, “It’s a matter of pride that Kerala is the first State to implement Aadhaar using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The launch of Aadhaar is in complete compliance with the Kerala Government’s IT Policy of using FOSS in all aspects of governance”.

    The Kerala Government has decided to enrol all the residents of the State under the ambitious Unique Identification (UID) programme of the Central Government within a year. This was announced by Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy today.

    Briefing the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said, “If everything works out according to the plan, the enrolment would be completed in the next one year and Kerala can have the distinction of being the first State in the country with 100% enrolment”.
