  • Botswana: IT can help solve unemployment - Saleshando

    Member of Parliament (MP) for Gaborone Central, Dumelang Saleshando, has hit hard at government for failing to solve the country's unemployment crisis by using the many unemployed youth who have knowledge in IT.

    Contributing to the proposed national information and communications technology policy, Saleshando said it was sad that the IT sector had proved to be a booming industry worldwide but the country was failing to use it to tackle the country's unemployment situation.

  • Botswana: Minister calls for adoption of ICT draft policy

    Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mrs Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, has asked Parliament to adopt the draft National Information and Communications Technology (ICT) policy.

    Presenting the draft, Mrs Venson-Moitoi said the technology could be used to meet Botswanas economic diversification plans.

    The policy focuses on seven key areas that are expected "to deliver the level of impact required to transform our society and economy," she said.

  • Botswana: Minister Skelemani Returns from the Republic of Estonia

    The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Honourable Phandu T.C. Skelemani returned today from a four (4) day official visit to the Republic of Estonia, at the invitation of his Estonian counterpart, Honourable Urmas Paet.

    On his arrival at the Estonian capital Tallinn, Hon. Skelemani was met by Botswana’s Ambassador to Sweden Her Excellency Ms. Bernadette S. Rathedi, who is accredited to Estonia, and Senior Officials from the Estonian Foreign Ministry.

    Minister of Communications, Science, and Technology, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has challenged Parliament with a draft Information Technology Bill with 'supportive legislative frame works designed to meet the country's economic diversification plans'.

    "The draft policy focuses on seven key areas that are expected to deliver the level of impact required to transform our society and economy," she said.

In Brasilien installierte der Konzern eine WiMAX-Infrastruktur in der Stadt Parintins. Der Ort mit 114.000 Einwohnern liegt auf einer abgelegenen Insel im Amazonas-Becken. Das teilte das Unternehmen gestern in Santa Clara, Kalifornien, mit.

  • Breitband für Afrika

    "Breitband für Afrika" ist eines von drei sogenannten Flaggschiffprojekten der "Global Alliance for ICT and Development" (GAID), die zum Ziel des "Weltgipfels zur Informationsgesellschaft" (WSIS) beitragen sollen, bis zum Jahr 2015 die Hälfte der Menschheit Online zu bringen.

    Das Projekt "Broadband for Africa" besteht aus drei selbständigen, aber miteinander verbundenen Elementen. Ein Backbone-Unterseekabel für Ost- und Südafrika, ein landgestütztes Backbone-Netz für mehr als 20 Länder im sub-saharischen Afrika und lokale Zugangsmöglichkeiten über WiMax oder Telezentren.

    Efforts are being made to produce better trained and certified employees for Kenya’s growing ICT sector a research suggested that companies are having difficulties finding candidates with skills suitable to the industry.

    Bondo University College, established by the government in 2009, is looking to break with standard education practices to produce graduates better placed to succeed in Kenya’s growing ICT industry. Meanwhile, the Kenya ICT Board has joined forces with Carnegie Mellon University to design a definitive examination for Kenyan software developers.

    159 years after the world’s first submarine cable was laid, will go down in history as the day East Africa became fully connected to the world’s digital super-highways. Seacom’s cable, 17,000km long and costing $650 million, is now officially ‘live’ with a capacity of 1,28 Terabytes per second, the equivalent of hosting two million international phone calls simultaneously.

    Unsurprisingly hyperbole was not on short supply at the launch event. Cisco’s representative announced, “We will change the way Africans work, live, learn and play with the rest of the world”. Seacom CEO Brian Herlihy urged the African youth to wake up every morning asking them “are we dreaming big enough?” An excitable Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, speaking from Dar es Salaam live via video link, declared his country ready for “e-commerce, e-government, e-everything”.

  • Broadband Said to Hit 77% of US Households by 2012

    The United States will close its digital divide significantly within the next four years, with 77% of U.S. households having a broadband Internet subscription, according to a new Gartner study.

    Just over half of U.S. households currently subscribe to broadband Internet services, but Gartner predicts that that percentage will grow by more than 20 points by 2012. Amanda Sabia, a Gartner principal research analyst, says one of the biggest factors in the spread of broadband will be the advent of such 4G wireless services as WiMAX and Long Term Evolution that are expected to be launched in various markets over the next four years.

    Prime minister Gordon Brown announced in a speech this morning that two new bodies will work with the public sector to drive forward his vision of a " digital economy".

    Brown said that both organisations will transform how public services are delivered over the internet, and make them more accessible to citizens.

  • Brunei: 'Use ICT to compete in globalised world'

    "Brunei Darussalam has to effectively use ICT as a leverage to sharpen its competitive edge and not be left behind in the global race. Our development policies should put greater emphasis on investment and financial allocation in this sector."

  • Brunei: First JPM Officers Complete ICT Conversion Programme

    The UN Global E-Government Development Report 2010 recorded Brunei Darussalam as being ranked 68th out of 184 in a study involving 210 countries, which is a rise of 19 places up from the previous ranking of 87th last 2008. This marks a significant achievement in the development and implementation of e-Govemment in the sultanate.

    This was stated by the Director of the National E-Government Centre (EGNC), Awg Hj Azhar Hj Ahmad in his welcoming note at the certificate presentation ceremony for the first batch of the Prime Minister's Office (JPM) ICT Conversion Programme who obtained Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis, yesterday, at the Civil Service Institute in Rimba.

  • Brunei: Funds Allocated For 15 e-Education Projects

    The development of ICT in education has been carefully planned and implemented over the last 25 years

    In the 8th National Development Plan, the Ministry of Education had allocated more than $145 million to carry out 29 e-education projects for the development of ICT infrastructure, hardware, software and multimedia development and human resource.

    In the current National Development Plan 2007-2012, the Ministry of Education has been allocated additional funds to carry out another 15 e-education projects. This was highlighted yesterday by Hj Mohd Daud bin Hj Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education, at the national workshop on New Information Technologies and Tools in Scientific Education.

  • Brunei: Local ICT Talent Not Sufficient

    Brunei lacks sufficient local talent in information communications technology (ICT) to offset dependence on foreign expertise, said the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office during yesterday's launching of the first ICT Career Day.

    Only about 50 per cent of the current workforce in the ICT field are locals in the private sector, while most e-government initiatives or ICT projects still rely on foreign consultants, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Eusoff Agaki Hj Ismail said.

  • Brunei: New Body Established To Support ICT Development

    The Minister of Communications yesterday announced the formation of e-Society Leadership Forum (ESLF) to support Brunei's ICT development, with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

    Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong said that the ESLF will be tasked to prepare an action plan that will lead towards the development of a "sophisticated society".

    "ESLF will also identify a benchmark partner for e-Society initiatives so that we are able to see and address our shortcomings while making the most of our strengths," he said during a ceremony to mark World Telecommunication and information Society Day.

  • Brunei: Shah Alam has ambitions to be 'city of the future'

    The Ministry of Education has spent $2.2 million over the past four months to improve the technological infrastructure of 76 Primary and Secondary Public Schools throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

    The upgrades are part of Phase I of the Government’s plan to “transform schools into strong, technological centres” through national and international linkages utilising an Information Communications Technology (ICT) Sub-Component.

    President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to use Information and Communications Technology to drive the change agenda of his administration and diversify the nation’s economy, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Eng. Babachir Lawal, has said.

    According to him, the journey had started with the use of ICT and the digital platform to fight corruption and insecurity in the country.
