  • Ghana to launch first phase of National Fibre Network soon

    The Government of Ghana is expected to officially commission the completion of work on the fibre optic network connecting the eastern corridor linking Ho in the Volta region and Bawku in the Northern Region of the country by the end of December this year. Information picked up by Biztechafrica indicates that all necessary checks and testing have been carried out by the project contractors on the network and it’s good to go.

    So far indications from the Ministry of Communications are that the government has initiated moves to award the western corridor contract come the first quarter of 2015.

  • Ghana to launch Ge-Gov Project in September to facilitate on-line business

    Key players of the Ge-Gov Project on Thursday exposed the media to the online reform and automation venture designed to facilitate a holistic approach to domestic tax and customs administration.

    The Project, which is a Public-Private Partnership between GCNet, Ministry of Communications, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Registrar General's Department ((RGD), and National Information Technology Agency, will roll out efficient collection of revenue and equitable distribution of the tax burden, ensure greater transparency and integrity and accountability to government for the professional management of taxes.

  • Ghana To Launch National Science Policy

    Dr Mustapha Ahmed, Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology says the National Science Policy, which had received Presidential assent would be launched when the prerequisite formalities are completed.

    He said the national blueprint would fast-track the development, application and integration of science, technology and innovation (STI) into the national development strategy for accelerated growth.

    Dr Ahmed was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on the sideline of the African Forum on STI for Youth Employment, Human Capital Development and Inclusive Growth, in Nairobi, Kenya.

  • Ghana to register about 12 million voters biometrically in 40 days

    Ghana’s Electoral Commission has projected that it will biometrically register 12 million eligible voters in 40 days, for the country’s upcoming elections scheduled for December 7, 2012, when the much debated registration exercise takes off on March 24, 2012.

    Disclosing this Wednesday March 7, 2012 in Accra at a roundtable discussion organised by the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), stated; “We will be doing our registration in 40 days and we do not expect to go far beyond 12 million”.

    The EC Chairman said the projection is based on figures so far received from the Statistical Service of Ghana on Ghana’s last census conducted in 2010.

  • Ghana to run .gh domain namespace

    The National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the Information Technology Implementing Agency of the Ministry of Communications has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ghana Dot Com, a successor company of Network Computer Systems Limited.

    Ghana Dot Com (GDC), the current manager of the .gh domain namespace, is to begin the process of transfer of the management of the namespace to Government.

    This is in line with the Electronic Transaction Act 2008 (ACT 772) which empowers the Minister of Communications to hold the name space and manage it in trust for the people of Ghana.

  • Ghana To Start E-Service Billing By April This Year

    All things being equal, the Government of Ghana (GoG) will initiate an e-service billing on pilot basis by April this year. This is made possible by a successful implementation of e-government network system among some 85 Ministries, Municipals, Departments and Agencies (MMDAs) to communicate efficiently and seamlessly and to do government business across the country.

    Mr. William Tevie, Director General ofthe National Information Technology Agency (NITA), disclosed this to about 500 participants drawn from various MMDAs at a conferenceyesterday at the Alisa Hotel here in the capital city of Accra. “It is in this light that NITA has invited you here to show you what services are available and to discuss the proposed pricing for these services before billing begins from 1st April, 2012,” said Tevie.

  • Ghana to test biometric voter system ahead of election

    Ghana’s Electoral Commission will conduct a two-day test of its biometric voter verification system at selected polling stations from November 3 to 4.

    The exercise aims to ensure that biometric machines have been properly evaluated before the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

    The machines will be used to verify voter identity before a voter is provided with a paper ballot, and is the first time biometrics will be used in a Ghana election.

  • Ghana To Upgrade Wireless Communication From WIMAX To Newer LTE Standard

    Ghana's National Information Technology Agency (NITA) will upgrade its current WIMAX networks to the newer Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies, a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals, by the end of this year.

    The move forms part of an agreement which it has signed with China's Huawei Technologies to implement the second phase of Ghana's e-Government network which is expected to witness the roll-out of 30 more Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), bringing NITA's total stations to 60 across the country.

  • Ghana Welcomes Mobile Payment System

    The Ministry of Communications in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning has organised a roundtable discussion to facilitate the growth of Mobile Payment Systems (MPS) in the country.

    The move is to seek the opinion of all on how to develop a regulatory framework that will promote the financial inclusion of all, especially the unbanked population.

    In an address, the Minister for Communications, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, explained that the MPS is a new and emerging business opportunity and thus Ghanaians need to create an enabling and robust regulatory framework that will define the relationship between the financial, telecom and the private sectors.

  • Ghana wins another award in ICT innovation

    Ghana, has won another award an in Information Communication Technology innovations contest by the World Summit Award (WAS) of the United Nations’ World Summit on Information Society (WSIS).

    The award winning project known as Tradenet (Esoko) was developed by Busy Internet, a Ghana based Internet solution provider, and it is the largest SMS based MIS project in Africa. It won an award in the e-Inclusion and Participation category.

  • Ghana, Italy could develop software on e-Health – Dr Boamah

    Dr Omani Boamah, Minister of Communications, has said Ghana is committed to strengthening its bilateral relations with Italy to draw the expertise of the country in various sectors.

    He said the country was ready to draw the expertise of Italy in social, political, economic and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to help move the Ghana forward.

    Dr Boamah said this when the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Tullio Gumah paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday in Accra.

  • Ghana, Microsoft to set up ICT training programmes

    Microsoft and the Ministry of Communication have agreed to partner a project that will deliver high-quality ICT policy training to public sector workers.

    The project will see the establishment of a Microsoft eGovernment Centre designed to facilitate professional and organisational capacity building within the government.

    This objective will kick-start a roll-out of eGovernment initiatives across the country.

  • Ghana: E-Governance Could Make Oil Business Transparent

    E-governance could help Ghana's higher authorities to deal responsibly with its new-found oil wealth, a leading scientist has said.

    In 2007, UK firm Tullow Oil announced the discovery of about 600 million barrels of offshore light oil in Ghana - the biggest recent oil discovery in Africa.

    But the country must develop new ways of interacting with its citizens and be more open to the public on activities within the oil industry to avoid conflict, said Akua Appiah-Akuramaa from the Geological Survey Department of Ghana. She was speaking at the 5th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training - eLearning Africa 2010 - held in Zambia last month (26-28 May).

  • Ghana: Experts Fight Against Monopoly of Fiber Optic

    Experts in the telecommunication industry in the West African Sub-region have called for policy implementation to regulate and also break the monopoly of cyber optic cables in the hands of few players, whiles intensifying the penetration of broadband access to the sub-region.

    This policy direction would be a bench mark policy to help West African country's to regulate the licensing of operators towards the growth of each country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

  • Ghana: 40 Million dollars for Implementation of Ghana’s ICT Program

    The World Bank Group today approved 40 million dollars loan to support the Government of Ghana to implement selected components of the its Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Accelerated Development Policy.

    This policy was completed a few years ago and adopted into Ghana’s Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy II.

  • Ghana: Africa E-Governance Academy Opens

    The Minister for Communication, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed government's commitment to sustaining the initiative of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) supported by the United Nations Development Programme and other partners to establish the Africa E-governance Academy.

    He made this remarks at the opening of the E-Governance Academy in Accra, yesterday, adding that Ghana is excited to be the host as this will give 'us the opportunity to enhance the creation of good governance.'

  • Ghana: Aggrey Ntim: Developing countries must upgrade infrastructure and skills training

    Bridging the widening gap between the "information-rich" North and "information-poor" South required developing countries to invest in skills training and upgrade information technology infrastructure, while exploring creative partnerships for research and development, Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, Ghana's Communications Minister, has said.

    He spoke as the Twelfth Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, entering its penultimate day in Accra, Ghana, held a round table on "Harnessing knowledge and technology for development", in which they weighed strategies to put the current information and communications technology boom at the service of poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

  • Ghana: All Public Libraries To Be Networked

    The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) in collaboration with the Ghana Library Board (GLB) has embarked on a project to network all the country’s public libraries.

    This is to ensure that users can access information and materials, including books online whilst the mobile library scheme would afford the rural population the opportunity to have access to ICT, the Internet and e-books.

  • Ghana: Are Public Sector Reforms Real?

    Ghana's public sector, from pre-Independence days to date, has lacked the capacity, the structures, skills and the right incentives to be responsive to the country"s development needs. The delivery of better, modern public services has been on the wish list of several governments yet success has also not made that leap from the wish list to achievement.

    Thus, in 2003, J H Mensah, as Senior Minister and in charge of public sector reform, remarked, "After five years of reform and experimentation … the public services have not enhanced their ability to deliver services.

  • Ghana: Biometric voting system by 2016

    Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communications, on Thursday said government had targeted 2016 for the implementation of biometric voting system in Ghana. "Government is ready to ensure that e-voting becomes a reality in 2016 but if things go well we may even start with it in 2012," he told a meeting of ICT and e-governance experts in Accra.

    The minister said this when he opened the maiden two-day General Meeting of the Africa E-Governance Academy (AEA). The academy, jointly established by the Open Society Institute of West Africa (OSIWA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was designed to develop and transfer knowledge and expertise concerning e-governance in West African countries as well as in Mauritania and Chad.
