Criminals will report to a machine, instead of a probation officer, in a new pilot scheme in the London Boroughs of Bexley and Bromley.

The initiative, which has already been trialled in the United States, is being introduced in a bid to cut costs. But union bosses have warned that it could lead to an increase in offending.

The machines will reduce face-to-face contact between offenders and probation staff, with criminals answering a series of questions posed automatically on a screen. The devices are also equipped with fingerprint readers.

  • GB: Probation officers to be replaced by electronic kiosks in pilot scheme

Napo, the probation union, warns that the plan is designed to cut jobs and could increase risk to the public

Unions are furious with government plans that will see offenders released from prison and those serving community sentences reporting to electronic kiosks rather than probation officers.

They are warning that the move, which will be introduced in a pilot scheme to be run in two London boroughs, Bexley and Bromley, and will be expanded across the capital if successful, could put the public at greater risk and is designed to cut staff numbers. But the government has defended the scheme, which will run from June until the end of the year, saying it will let probation officers spend more time with offenders.

  • GB: Probation union slams machine move

Plans for criminals to report to a machine instead of a probation officer in a bid to cut costs defy belief and risk increasing offending, a union has warned.

The probation union Napo warned the scheme would damage public confidence in the supervision of offenders, but probation bosses said it could reduce bureaucracy and help staff make the best use of their time.

  • Health Care Kiosks Spring Up in Sub-Saharan Africa

How long did you have to wait to see your doctor the last time you were ill? A few days? Or maybe just a few hours? Yet as Americans, the health care crisis is a constant topic of daily conversation and political debate. However, health care in the U.S. is exponentially more accessible than that of other regions of the world. While in America we have one doctor for every 390 people, regions in sub-Saharan Africa have one doctor for every 50,000 people. Many people living in the rural areas of countries such as Tanzania or Kenya must travel for an entire day and spend up to two days' income for medical advice.

While you might be wondering what, other than being sympathetic, we can do from across the world, a group of students at The Pennsylvania State University has jumped to the challenge to make a difference. These students have enrolled in classes that will allow them to go above and beyond what is imagined, much less expected, of young adults.
