  • Aadhaar Presents A Plethora Of Opportunities For India Inc.

    The $1.6 billion ‘Aadhaar’ initiative by the Indian government will change the lives of a billion residents very soon. Initially conceived by the Planning Commission, Aadhaar is basically a 12-digit unique number which theUnique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will issue for every Indian resident. The numbers will be stored in a centralised database and linked to the basic demographics (name, age, gender and address) and biometric information (photograph, 10 fingerprints and iris) of each individual. According to current plans, by 2014, around one million new ids will be issued every day, thus completing 50 per cent of the enrolment. Needless to say, such an initiative will also create numerous opportunities in IT services, biometrics, credit profiling, banking, education and hospitality space.

    Experts converging at the VCCircle Insights on The Aadhaar Project, held at the ITC Grand Central, Mumbai, discussed the implications in great details. The event did witness prominent investors, architects and builders behind the initiative meeting on a common platform to discuss its mission, as well as the investable opportunities created by the project.

  • AE: Eida has world's largest integrated biometrics

    Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) has announced the possession of the world's largest database of civil integrated biometrics within the UAE population register system with a total of around 103 million decimal and rounded fingerprints as well as the prints of the palm, hand and hand side and over 15 million facial prints and digital signatures, until mid of 11th October.

    On the sidelines of its participation in GITEX Technology Week 2012, which kicked off in Dubai world Trade Centre on Sunday, the Emirates ID announced that it had submitted an official application to the World Record Academy to register its attempt to achieve a record, the first of its kind in the world, that would bring it new international recognition of the unprecedented figure it achieved.

  • AE: Dubai immigration to set up “smart electronic gates”

    Immigration Department E-services Director General, Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, announced plans to establish “smart electronic gates” in preparation for a sharp escalation in passenger inflow in two years.

    The e-gates will have a passport reader to instantly check from the existing database on whether the entry of the passenger was legal; with a pre-installed camera to verify the passenger’s identity by matching his image against the photograph on the passport.

  • AE: Dubai to introduce Facial Recognition System in its Public Transport System

    Dubai's Transport Department is working on a project to ensure more security for the locals. They are almost ready to introduce the facial recognition feature on the public transport. Obaid al-Hathboor, director of Dubai's Transport Security Department, said, the facial recognition technology is highly effective in identifying suspicious and wanted people. He added the governance is aiming at improved performance with current capabilities, ensuring a high level of security in metro stations and other transport sectors.

    The country is hosting the global Expo exhibition from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. This new securtiy feature is all set to bring up before the global expo exhibition hosted by Dubai. This is not the first time the AI is used in Dubai Public Transport. Dubai international airport is being used this feature for the last few months as a part of the process of becoming a "smart city" in the Middle East.

    Dubai is all set to introduce the feature of facial recognition system on public transport to assure more security for the locals, the officials announced on Sunday.

    "This technology has proven its effectiveness to identify suspicious and wanted people," said Obaid al-Hathboor, director of Dubai's Transport Security Department.

    A new smart e-Gate system which reads passport information and captures biometric data including facial recognition in 12 to 14 seconds has been launched at the Dubai International Airport yesterday. Initially, it is installed at Terminal 3 arrival and will eventually be installed across all Dubai International’s immigration entry and exit points soon.

    The system, equipped with retinal scan using a high-accuracy camera, will eliminate the need for the e-Gate card currently issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs (GDRFA).

    The Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) has fixed a five-year validity for Emiratis' national ID card because of the five-year life span of the electronic chip in the card, the authority said Wednesday in a statement.

    The life span of the electronic chip in the national ID card is five years, Eida said.

    There may be biological changes in an individual due to ageing which affected biometrics such as fingerprinting, an authority statement said.

  • AE: Free Smart Gate registration at Dubai Mall

    Registered travellers will be able to clear the immigration process at Dubai Airports ‘within seconds.’

    Starting August 12, UAE residents can register to access the Smart Gates at Dubai airports free-of-charge at The Dubai Mall, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) has announced.

    Once registered, travellers can bypass the long lines at passport control, clearing the immigration process at Dubai airports within seconds.

  • Algeria launches biometric passports

    Algeria just issued its long-awaited biometric passports.

    "The work of producing biometric passports is part of the process of modernising the administration and improving the security of documents needed by Algerian citizens for their daily lives," Algerian Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said at the January 4th launch ceremony.

    The high-tech Algeria biometric passport contains an electronic chip with information about the holder, including a digitised photograph, fingerprints and signature.

  • AM: Biometric data passports cost 15 000 AMD

    Starting September Armenia will start issuing passports with biometric data and identification cards, said head of the passport-visa control of the Armenian Police, on February 15.

    Norayr Muradkhanyan said that all the citizens who are 16 and are receiving a passport for the first time will be issued those pasports. Citizens who already have a passport, can use them until expiration or change them if they so desire.

  • AM: Citizens can get electronic passports this year

    Citizens of the Republic of Armenia can get electronic passports this year. The implementation of the system of electronic passports and ID cards is expected to reinforce the security of individual documents of the citizens.

    According to the Chief of the Passport and Visa Department of RA Police Norayr Muradkhanyan, the implementation of biometric/electronic passports will help avoid a number of problems at checkpoints.

    The electronic passports include the same information as the current passports plus the fingerprints. ID cards will be used inside the country, while the biometric passports are necessary for leaving abroad.

  • AM: Easy ID: “Bio” passport scheme begins June 1; should make EU travel easier

    Hovhannes Kocharyan, head of the Passport and Visa Department of the Police, at a press conference on Monday said the passports with biometric data to be used in Armenian beginning June 1 will increase citizens’ chances for traveling more easily.

    “Even though this system has been proposed by entitled bodies of the European Union [EU], and the proposal has been confirmed by a number of international documents regulating the partnership between Armenia and EU, the Republic of Armenia was also interested in the introduction of this system, because it gives an opportunity [to citizens of Armenia] to enjoy a more alleviated visa regime while travelling to EU member countries,” Kocharyan said, adding that the new passports will decrease the possibility of committing passport fraud, as well as will simplify the identification process of a person, and the so-called, personae non gratae will be found more easily.

  • AM: New biometric passports to be valid for five years

    The process of implementation of biometric passports will start in September 2011. Armenia has been preparing for the changes since 2008 at the request of the UN. The purpose is to make the Armenian passports and identification documents more reliable, thus becoming more trustworthy for other countries, Head of the Passport and Visa Department of the Police Norayr Muradkhanyan told a press conference today.

    Social security cards are expected to come out of use after the implementation of documents with biometric data. Their number will be posted on ID cards and biometric passports.

  • Andhra Pradesh becomes the first state in India to get biometric authentication cards

    Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy launched the Aadhar-based smart cards in Maheswaram Mandal, which is about 24 km from Hyderabad.

    Maheswaram became the first revenue division in the country to use the biometric authentication cards.

    Reddy said 11,000 households in the Mandal would get ration on the basis of the cards and it would also be useful for availing a number of other welfare schemes of the state government.
