Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said his govt plans to transform Kalaburagi into a smart city with an estimated investment of Rs 1,685 crore. The initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for locals and attract investments in the region.
Siddaramaiah made the announcement during ‘Kalyana Karnataka Amrut Mahotsav' celebrations and the 10th anniversary of Kalyana Karnataka's special status under Article 371(J) of the Constitution.
He pointed out that Bidar, Kalaburagi, and Raichur districts, which were under the Nizam of Hyderabad, gained freedom in 1948 — a year later than the rest of the country. He credited the sacrifices of freedom fighters, the vision of Jawaharlal Nehru, and the strength of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for the region's integration into India. "I pay tribute to all the great people who fought for the liberation of Kalyana Karnataka," he said.
Under Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana 2.0, Kalaburagi and Ballari municipal corporations will receive Rs 200 crore for basic infrastructure development. Siddaramaiah said his govt has launched the ‘Kalyana Patha' scheme to improve road connectivity and rural development in the region. Under the initiative 1,150km of roads will be constructed in rural assembly constituencies, with a budget of Rs 1,000 crore.
Siddaramaiah also announced that the govt is prepared to support the establishment of an AIIMS in Raichur and urged the central govt to expedite the process.
For the fiscal year 2024-25, he said the state aims to generate 4.8 crore person-days of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme across seven districts, having already generated 3.4 crore person-days providing employment to 13.7 lakh people. To boost tourism, Rs 100 crore will be allocated to develop Anjanadri Hills and surrounding areas in Koppal district.
In Ballari, the govt plans to establish a jeans apparel park and common facility centre to bring local industry to world-class standards. For the 2024-25 budget, Rs 5,000 crore has been allocated to the Kalyana Karnataka Development Board for regional development projects.
A committee led by Professor Govind Rao will study economic and social changes in the region and recommend measures to reduce inequalities, Siddaramaiah said.
