Residents of 11 Belgian cities were issued Java-based identity cards - the first step in the governments plan to issue every Belgian resident over 12 years old with an electronic ID card. US-based Sun Microsystems developed the technology for the card, on which will be kept traditional Belgian identification information, including the name, a photograph, and the date of birth of the card-holder. It is the largest use of Java card technology on the continent.
Card-holders will also be able to use their card to apply an electronic signature to documents.
