Transforming Government since 2001
The German city of Düsseldorf is setting up a city-wide WLAN network. The city will equip all of its 195 schools with wireless access points, in order to guarantee complete coverage. As part of the initiative, Networked Schools (Schulen ans Netz), T-DSL connections will used to access the network, which will be free for city employees and the schools themselves. Private users will be charged for the use of the wireless network. The first 50 access points will be installed in the next 12 months and will be equipped with content filters and firewalls. Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems will be responsible for setting-up and managing the network, which will also allow schools to directly communicate with each other.

Of course, it should also be noted that WLAN might just open up completely new ways of dealing with forgotten homework, cheating at exams, checking e-mails during classes, etc.
