Australians could soon become the first citizens without a paper copy of their passport
Australia airports now feature SmartGates to read digital passport information, but more data could soon end up in the cloud.Australia and New Zealand have a very close relationship (New Zealand is often referred to as Australia’s Canada) and citizens between the two countries already are already free to travel and live in each country, but now still require a passport to cross each others’ borders; under the trial Australian and New Zealand citizens would be free to travel to the other country without the use of a passport but with the biometric scanning at the border.
British passports currently hold name images and passport number on a small chipBishop told Australian reporters that the idea of a cloud passport, where a traveller’s identity and biometrics data would be stored in a cloud, came out of a hipster-style-hackathon held at the Department of Foreign Affairs. The staff voted, on about 392 pitches among these top 10 were presented in front of the panel of judges.The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated that keeping citizens’ data secure was of the upmost importance when considering cloud passports.Now, that automation could go one step further.According to Ms Bishop, this question of security is the “fundamental issue” at the heart of trialling a cloud passport system.”We wouldn’t do it if it were not able to be secure”.As per reported by Xinhua news, the foreign minister said that they came to this idea of “Cloud Passport” after having a enormous discussion with Australia’s a few of the best innovators.”The idea of a cloud passport would of course be grounded in absolute security”. “We’re in discussions with New Zealand and if we’re able to put in place the appropriate requirements, including security, then it’s something we’d like to trial and implement”.
