In an Australian first, the State Government plans to establish a whole-of-Government Data Analytics Centre.

Announcing the plan, Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, Victor Dominello (pictured) said data was one of the greatest assets held by Government, but when it was buried away in bureaucracy it was of little value.

Mr Dominello said a specialist Steering Committee would be advising on the establishment of the Centre and an industry Advisory Body would assist in guiding its ongoing work.

He said the Steering Committee would include NSW Privacy Commissioner, Elizabeth Coombs; NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Mary O’Kane; NSW Customer Service Commissioner, Mike Pratt; and NSW Information Commissioner, Liz Tydd.

“Whether it’s tackling crime, combatting obesity or addressing housing affordability, we cannot hope to develop solutions to the long-term challenges that our State faces without an effective whole-of-Government data-sharing platform,” Mr Dominello said.

He said data analytics had been used successfully in jurisdictions like New Zealand, New York City and the State of Michigan to improve the lives of citizens through better targeted and more coordinated Government service delivery.

The Minister is also encouraging people to share their ideas on positioning NSW as a leader in smart Government, as part of the public consultation on the State’s ICT Strategy.

“Since we launched the ICT Strategy three years ago, the hard work of NSW Government Agencies to transform their business is already paying off,” Mr Dominello said.

“They are more collaborative, more mobile and more open in delivery of services.

He said it was now easier for suppliers, especially small and medium enterprises, to do business with Government.

“We are publishing more data than ever before, which consumers are eager to use and share,” Mr Dominello said.

He said that in the three years since the ICT Strategy was launched, the NSW Government had established and implemented Service NSW, consolidated 130 data centres into two centralised Government data centres and introduced new information and communication technology (ICT) investment and procurement processes.

Mr Dominello said that when fully operational, the new whole-of-Government Data Analytics Centre would allow data to be linked and shared across Government and with industry and researchers.

He said digital services and the use of data would play a vital role in shaping the design and delivery of Government services and would mean Government could take advantage of new technologies.

Public consultation is open until 17 August.
