This is now a possibility for Port Stephens residents thanks to Telehealth technology.
Residents travelling to Newcastle to meet with doctors and specialists will now be able to attend appointments from the comfort of their home, aged care service or doctor's office.
Telehealth technology allows patients to communicate via a video or audio link-up with specialists in another location.
Patients can talk to, hear and see health professionals using high-speed internet, cameras, speakers and monitors which are hooked up at both locations.
Port Stephens East Health Committee chairwoman Jeanette Antrum held an information session about the new service yesterday, August 13, at the Nelson Bay Community Health Centre.
"Already many Hunter New England Health specialists are offering patients access to their appointments at home," Mrs Antrum said.
"It's great that people in our area, provided their doctor and clinician thinks it's appropriate, may also take advantage of this technology. It will be very interesting to understand how this type of technology can be used as part of the clinical practice and models of care."
