The National Broadband Network will be available in more parts of the Lower Hunter in the next 12 months.

About 6600 homes and businesses in NSW have been added to the high-speed broadband rollout list.

They will join the 131,500 premises already able to access the NBN across Australia.

The latest rollout should take about 12 months to complete.

Paterson MP Bob Baldwin said the rollout of fibre and fixed wireless broadband at East Maitland, Pitnacree, Tenambit, Marshdale and Stroud had begun.

“Fixed mobile services should have been the first infrastructure item rolled out under the NBN by the former Labor government, as these areas suffer the lowest access speeds and were never going to be connected by fibre,” he said.

NBN Co spokesman Trent Williams said the rollout would provide farms, homes and businesses in regional areas with high-speed broadband that people in cities took for granted.

“The NBN can open up opportunities for families and business owners to participate in the digital economy,” he said.

“Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to e-health resources, online education, teleworking opportunities and entertainment on demand.”
