The new Princess Alexandra Hospital Telehealth centre will soon deal with 5000 consultations a year through the technology which enables doctors to read charts and speak face to face with medical professionals and patients in every corner of the state.
Federal Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy said the "ground-breaking service" was already making a tangible difference to patients across regional Queensland.
He said it was a glimpse into the future of healthcare delivery.
Bruce and Annette Maunder spoke via video conference from a hospital room in Warwick.
Mrs Maunder said from her bed that she was relieved she did not have to make the four-hour trek to Brisbane to consult with specialists about her condition.
Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg, Member for Warwick, said the Telehealth centre would deliver specialist services such as cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology and geriatrics.
"This makes enhanced treatment options, access to patient records and improved care coordination all possible," he said.
