Transforming Government since 2001
The Queensland Government’s shared mail, IT, payroll and HR services will undergo a major overhaul to improve efficiency and reliability for Departments, public servants and the public.

IT Minister Ros Bates said the Newman Government was reshaping shared services to reduce costs, confusing regulations and onerous red tape for taxpayers.

“A new One Stop Shop will be developed to provide Queenslanders with easy and convenient access to Government information online, over the phone and face-to-face,” Ms Bates said.

“The previous Labor Government applied a ‘government knows best’ attitude to these vital services.

“They ignored the desperate need for review, resulting in even more waste and inefficiency.

“Our reform agenda will be a boon for the Queensland IT industry, starting with the outsourcing of payroll functions for the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts.

“We’re improving collaboration between researchers and business, putting an end to Labor’s corporate welfare handouts.”

Ms Bates said the 2012-13 State Budget included:

  • $42.12 million to support the creation of an Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University

  • Support for the Chief Scientist with up to 49 full-time employees from Innovation and Science Development to assist with audit and decision rules

  • $3 million injection to deliver arts to all Queenslanders through the Regional Arts Fund

  • $3 million for the Super Star Fund that promotes major local productions featuring renowned artists

  • An Art Grants Support Officer to reduce red tape for Queenslanders and provide a one stop shop to arts funding.

Ms Bates said an arts grants advisory board would be established to improve access to grants, simplify categories and streamline application processes.

“We’ve had to reshape some grants programs to find savings that will help get the state’s finances back on track,” she said.

“By paying down the debt we inherited from Labor, we’ll be able to spend more on the arts and science in the future.”
