Telstra Business has struck a deal with the Australian arm of telehealth provider, Healthways, worth $1.9 million.

The main component of the deal - part of a three-year strategic partnership between the two companies - will result in Healthways Australia moving the bulk of its information and communications technology to Telstra’s cloud-based and fully secure virtual servers.

The companies will also work together on the development of new health applications, such as a telematic monitoring device for diabetes Healthways Australia is trialing for Telstra.

Telstra’s private cloud gives Healthways Australia flexibility to respond to the market and provides scalability to expand its environment through Telstra’s.

Since launching locally in 2009, Healthways Australia has delivered health and well-being solutions to 1.4 million Australians via its Well-Being Connect behaviour change web application.

It currently provides telephonic chronic disease support, via Registered Nurses, to more than 30000 clients.

Telstra business group managing director, Will Irving said Healthways Australia is a growing business with data demands, which needed security for confidential personal data.

Managing Director of Healthways Australia, Timothy Morphy said this was a an opportunity to grow the business and work with Telstra on up and coming telehealth initiatives.

“Telstra has a vast interest in the healthcare space,” he said.

“We’re comfortable knowing our data is secure in Telstra’s private cloud.”

Telstra is also working with Healthways Australia to conduct trials of a solution to manage diabetes and other health initiatives.

Patients using Healthways Australia services access them via their Well-Being Connect Website or through tele-consultations with health coaches, including dieticians and exercise physiologists.

Healthways Australia’s customers include HCF, NSW Health and Teachers Health Fund.
