This regional mobile communications project (RMPP) will boost high-speed, fast-access coverage across major roads, highways and regional communities.
The RMPP project kicks off with a US$41 million (AUD$38.2 million) three-year contract that has been awarded to Australian telco, Telstra.
The project delivers advanced video, voice and high-speed mobile broadband communications services to regional areas across Western Australia.
The network also streamlines the state’s emergency management service capabilities. These services encompass government and non-government agencies, as well as first responders, fire, police and ambulance services.
First round of funding fast-tracks the development of vital infrastructure supporting next-generation (nextgen) broadband and mobile communications, says WA’s minister for science and innovation, John Day.
The RMPP project will boost the state’s mobile phone usage by more than 22 percent, while rolling out next-generation (nexgen) services, Minister Day says.
Expanded coverage will make regional, rural and remote communities self-sustainable and access affordable services.
Improved radio and mobile communications coverage will improve the state’s public safety record, says WA’s minister for regional development, Brendon Grylls.
“Fire-fighters and emergency medical services can use wireless broadband to download vital information while out in the field,” he says.
“They will be able to remotely access and transmit information in real-time.”
Western Australia is prone to massive bushfires. Rates of road fatalities remain high in remote areas and out-of-coverage roads and highways.
The state’s mobile communications program is being administered by the Department of Commerce together with the Department of Regional Development and Lands.
