"New Medicare items will allow a range of existing consultation services to be provided via video conferencing and additional rebates on top of these items recognize the increased complexity of providing a service to a remote patient", said Health Minister Nicola Roxon.
When health care providers give their first telehealth consultation, the Gillard government will give them a $6,000 one-time incentive payment. In addition, to encourage bulk billing, practitioners will also receive another $20 for each and every video link service that they bill patients in that way for a 12-month period.
These new telehealth services will start on July 1, so patients in regional, rural and areas outside of the cities will be able to access the big-city specialists from their own general practitioner's clinic without having to take a long trip just to get valuable medical advice.
