Transforming Government since 2001
Australian utility group NBN Co., will be critical to the sucess of the government's ambitions to roll out broadband access across the country in a $36 billion investment program aimed at boosting social and economic inclusion, according to a new report.

The report, entitled "Australia - The National Broadband Network", says questions remain about the business model for Australia's new digital network, and that NBN's architecture and design decisions will likely establish the basis of the new network for at least the next 25 years.

Australia's government has backed a $36 billion national fibre-to-the-home broadband network in a move which, if well executed, could deliver significant social and economic benefits in education, healthcare, energy and the environment.

The comprehensive report notes that it will be essential that the planned Australian National Broadband Network (NBN) incorporates the government's vision of a multiple use network.

The research examines the background of the government's move, how the network will likely be implemented within the country's regulatory system and its impact on diverse business sectors among other analysis.

Over 30 sites related to the network are expected to become operational during 2011, according to the report.

Australia's planned broadband network could particularly benefit the healthcare industry, and the report notes that the country's government is leading the way in strategic trans-sector thinking, linking e-health developments to the NBN.

Early diagnosis and after-treatment patient monitoring are two areas where significant synergies may be found, using applications provided to users within their own homes.

The analysis also notes that the use of IT and telecommunications technology within educational environments will also increase dramatically during the next five years, as high-speed fibre-based broadband becomes widely available across the country.

The research also incorporates updates on related telecommunications infrastructure developments as well as trends and innovations related to e-education and e-government services.
