The NSW Government will contribute $7.5 million to establish the centre and support it to 2013. Matching in-kind support will be provided the CSIRO and NICTA.
At start up in 2011 the centre will employ about 20 people in the CSIRO's ICT Centre in Marsfield but from the outset will operate over multiple sites. The Marsfield site will be connected by broadband to NICTA at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern, Sydney and to the NSW Government's NBN testbed at Parkbridge Estate, south west of Sydney. In 2011 the network will extend to Armidale, an NBN first release site.
The NSW Government said the centre's projects would "target measureable improvements in the delivery of health, education, infrastructure and e-government services while creating ICT commercialisation opportunities…[It] will work with industry to create and deliver breakthrough broadband applications in four key areas: digital media and interactive broadcasting; telehealth and e-health technologies; infrastructure such as smart grids and e-government."
Launching the centre, NSW treasurer, Eric Roozendaal, said: "The aim of the centre is to generate technology that can be commercialised and sold, creating growth and jobs for our ICT sector and the broader economy."
The Director of the CSIRO ICT Centre, Dr Ian Oppermann, said: "With ACBI's broadband network we'll take the broadband applications we're developing out of the lab and bring them into the real world. We'll test our applications with real people, over a real network, bridging real distances between real towns.
"With ACBI we will develop services for broadband and make sure they work, ensure everyone can get access to them and, most importantly, change the way people interact with technology."
