Transforming Government since 2001
The Premier and Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, David Bartlett, today welcomed some of the most curious and innovative minds in Information Technology to Tasmanian shores, as he opened the TASICT Technology Tasmania 2010 conference in Hobart.

Tasmania is at the frontier of opportunities offered by the National Broadband Network (NBN), with the first nodes soon to be rolled out in Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point.

“Those opportunities will transform the way we do business, and drive our economy to new heights,” Mr Bartlett said.

“Innovation is the key to our economic future, and becoming the most connected place on the planet is central to that.

“It’s little wonder the eyes of IT innovators and entrepreneurs are becoming firmly fixed on Tasmania, and this event is pulling such a quality crowd.

Last week’s State Budget included $4.85-million for projects to showcase the potential of the NBN, including:

  • A Digital Futures Development Fund, providing seed funding to both the ICT industry and wider business community, to maximise social and economic opportunities.
  • A Pavilion Experience Centre, in partnership with industry.
  • Seeking to undertake cutting edge virtual E-health trials, in homes.
  • A SmartGrid trial to investigate links between the NBN and more sustainable energy management.

The budget also featured a significant investment of $8.87-million over three years, to start transforming IT services across the public sector, and make Government communications, and community access to Government, more efficient.

Mr Bartlett congratulated TASICT, the state’s peak information technology industry body, on attracting an outstanding line-up of speakers to the conference, including leading Google strategist Alan Noble, for the keynote address.

“The quality of speakers at this conference shows Tasmania’s ICT industry is highly respected, and winning global attention,” Mr Bartlett said.

“The conference will give a unique insight into new trends and technologies in the ICT sector, and present incredible networking opportunities.

“As Tasmania’s first ever Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, I look forward to seeing the benefits flowing to Tasmania’s IT industry from this two day conference.”
