The Business Council of Australia (BCA) said implementation of a national e-health strategy would provide benefits worth 28 billion Australian dollars (26 billion U.S. dollars) in the first eight years.
Making e-health efficient will require both private and public investment, the group argued.
In a letter to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, released on Monday, BCA chief executive Katie Lahey said e-health" will require national leadership and commitment to investment in national infrastructure".
"But before business can begin to invest, state and federal government must commit to making their own investments in the national infrastructure.
"Governments must also commit to invest in connecting public health providers to realize the potential benefits for patients and the sector," she said.
A paper supporting the letter estimates e-health benefits of 27.8 billion Australian dollars (25.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the first eight years of implementation, outstripping the 6.3 billion Australian dollars (5.8 billion U.S. dollars) investment over five years.
