The government agency set up to assist the roll-out of electronic health services in Australia, the National eHealth Transition Authority, has released its much-anticipated strategic plan for progressing the nation's stalled eHealth initiatives.

The NeHTA plan positions the organisation as a long term implementation authority, extending the role it has so far played in standards setting. NeHTA was established by Federal, state and territory health departments and is chaired by businessman David Gonski.

In order for the National Broadband Network (NBN) to be successful, the Federal Government needs to find out how consumers and businesses expect to use it, professional services company Deloitte says.

"We believe it's time to look at the consumer and business involvement," technology, media and telecommunications leader Damien Tampling says. "How it's going to be used by consumers will make it a successful project.

A technology cluster aimed at supporting and strengthening government ICT industries in Australia will inject $150,000 into the industry in 2010, with a commitment for a further $100,000 per annum through to 2011-12.

The e-government cluster is a partnership between National ICT Australia (NICTA), the ACT government, several major international companies, ACT companies and other research organisations including the ANU.
