Today, there are more people and businesses proliferating technologies at unprecedented rates; however, it is also being done at rates faster than many cities can react. As we reach Industry 4.0, how we live must be made smarter. Hence, the gauntlet has been laid down for urban leaders to innovate and, if necessary, disrupt to solve perennial urban challenges.

Already a global forerunner in smart city initiatives Singapore believes that technological disruption is a global force to be both confronted and harnessed. This is what drives its Smart Nation ambitions, aimed at transitioning the nation to the next industrial phase.

Four international companies have confirmed their plans to set up base in Punggol Digital District, a move that will create over 2,000 tech jobs ranging from data analysts and solution engineers to artificial intelligence and blockchain developers.

Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong on Wednesday (July 28) announced the four companies, saying each is "bringing different expertise to the mix".

Envision Digital and ST Engineering have agreed to jointly build an end-to-end net zero carbon urban infrastructure solution for Singapore’s public and commercial sectors, as a contribution to the city’s Energy Reset Initiative under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which pushes for greener and sustainable commercial and industrial buildings.

In an MOU signed recently, both companies  have committed six months to build cloud-based, Integrated Net Zero Carbon Digital Building Suite that connects and facilitates real-time data flows across ST Engineering’s smart digital building solutions. These include connected IoT sensors for smart lighting and indoor daylight harvesting, integrated security management systems, smart car park platforms, advanced crowd detection systems and data-driven facility management systems.
