NTT Docomo and Mitsubishi Estate will collaborate on the smart city in the Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho area, based on the Whole Town Workplace Concept.

NTT Docomo and Mitsubishi Estate are collaborating on a next-generation smart city in the Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho area of Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

The city will be underpinned with 5G services utilising advanced technologies, including millimetre wave (26GHz band).

Smart city infrastructure

The smart city infrastructure will combine NTT Docomo’s latest base station equipment and advanced 5G services with Mitsubishi Estate’s expertise in utilising real estate assets and securing infrastructure in central office and commercial areas of Japan where communication traffic is extremely concentrated.

This will involve constructing a next-generation infrastructure base or cluster that takes into account the urban landscape and employs antenna placement suitable for millimetre-wave radio wave characteristics.

The cluster will contribute to the development of Japan’s telecommunications technology and urban development, and the creation of new use cases.

The Marunouchi area, densely packed with high-rise office buildings and commercial facilities, is one of Japan’s leading office and commercial districts, and is an area with extremely high traffic volume on a daily basis.

NTT Docomo has already installed new base stations in the Marunouchi area that incorporate advanced technologies such as the latest global base station equipment, Tri-Band Massive MIMO (combined technology using the existing 3-band (3.5GHz, 3.7GHz, and 4.5GHz bands, totaling 280MHz)), glass antennas, and a total of 800MHz of millimetre-wave bandwidth acquired in Japan’s first auction.

Mitsubishi Estate will promote its Whole Town Workplace concept, which views the entire area as a platform and provides initiatives that are difficult for individual tenant companies to realise on their own throughout the area. The group said it also aims to create an urban environment where people think, “I want to work here, I want to have an office here, I want to visit here”.

NTT Docomo and Mitsubishi Estate have been collaborating to rapidly develop base stations nationwide by utilising Mitsubishi Estate’s 5G infrastructure sharing business. This new collaboration will further combine the strengths of both companies to rapidly construct advanced clusters while considering the landscape, transforming the Marunouchi area into a next-generation smart city befitting one of the world’s leading business districts.

Using the urban antenna solutions and urban infrastructure asset utilisation know-how established through this initiative as a model case, the two companies plan to sequentially deploy clusters to the central areas of major cities nationwide, beyond the Marunouchi area.

In the future, they aim not only to expand the wireless communication environment but also to build a wired communication environment using APN technology that achieves high-capacity, low-latency, and low-power consumption, enhancing the communication equipment environment for the entire smart city.
