
NTT Docomo and Mitsubishi Estate Corporation have agreed to develop next-generation, 5G-powered smart city clusters in the Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho districts of Tokyo's Marunouchi area.

The Marunouchi area is one of Japan's leading office and commercial districts, experiencing high volumes of daily data traffic.
The project involves the deployment of 5G infrastructure, including 26GHz millimeter-wave spectrum (providing 800MHz of combined bandwidth), Tri-Band Massive MIMO and glass antennas.
NTT has already installed new basestations with advanced technologies such as glass antennas in the Marunouchi area to improve communication quality and ensure a comfortable user experience. But the telecom operator said it needed to install more to support emerging digital services.
"Due to the strong, straight-line propagation of millimetre waves and their vulnerability to obstructions, numerous antennas must be installed in locations with good visibility," the company said in a statement. "This presents a significant challenge in terms of blending in with the beautiful urban landscape of the historic Marunouchi area."
Blending smart infrastructure into the city's landscape
A unique feature of the Marunouchi smart city project is its focus on balancing technological advancement with preserving the urban landscape.
According to NTT Docomo, the project will develop urban antenna solutions that can be placed in an optimal way without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the architectural landscape.
The company is also considering leveraging Mitsubishi Estate's infrastructure assets, such as data centers and fiber optic networks, to expedite the development of the communication infrastructure required for a next-generation smart city.
The project is intended to serve as a blueprint for NTT Docomo and Mitsubishi Estate to develop smart city clusters in major urban areas across Japan.
According to NTT Docomo, future smart city projects will also involve deploying wired communication environments using APN (All Photonics Network) technology.
